Back in 1992 a small movie debuted in June at the Los Angeles International Film Festival known as My Grandpa Is A Vampire (Also known as Moonrise & Grampire) starring none other than THE best Vampire Grandpa in the world, Grandpa Munster (Sam Dracula) Al Lewis himself.
Directed by David Blyth and written by Michael Heath the film centers around Lonny played by Justin Gocke. Lonny is a typical adolescent boy who likes sports all of the time, gross jokes most of the time and girls only some of the time. But he is also prepared for adventure. Lonny is given a round-trip vacation from California to New Zealand for a long visit with his eccentric grandfather (Al Lewis). While in New Zealand Lonny discovers that his grandpa is a vampire. Terrified at first, he soon discovers that his grandpa is a good and decent vampire.
Director David Blyth was won over by Michael Heath's script because it flipped how vampire films were done at the time, and liked that it “was a plea for children to be allowed to keep and develop their imaginations”.
All of that said we just learned My Grandpa Is A Vampire is being released and remastered onto blu-ray from Severin Films. The blu-ray will include some special features along with advanced specs from the original version. You can preorder this item today, with the release date of October 25, 2022. You can pre-order HERE
With all of the roles we have seen Al Lewis play after his days of Grandpa Munster, the big questions from me are, Did Mr.Lewis LOVE to play the vampire grandpa roll or was he simply just being typecast, or the third option, he both loved it and he was typecast but didn't care.
